The Balnuaran of Clava, or Clava Cairns, is set
attractively in a wooded area with three cairns, two of them with a passage to a central
clearing in the cairn. Standing stones are arranged round the cairns. Clava is near
Inverness, a little way off the road running east from Inverness to the site of the
Culloden battlefield. There are cup and ring marks at the entrance to one of the
passagewayed cairns, and on one of the kerbstones of the cairn nearest the entrance to the
site.
In late 1999 a Belgian tourist took a rock from the site. He mailed it back to the
Inverness tourist board after suffering several family misfortunes, which just goes to
show... (Guardian newspaper, January 2000)
